LIGHT MATTER PIERRE LEGRAND
A Multimedia Art Installation // Auroville, 1999
A PARCOURS THROUGH AN
ARTIST”S BOOK
WHERE THE PAGES BECOME
POROUS WALLS
OF A DREAM PALACE
A TRI-DIMENSIONAL SPACE
WHERE ANU’S POEMS ARE
ACTUAL STRUCTURES OF SPACEWORDS AS INTEREDIARIES BETWEEN
THE SPECATOR AND PURE LGHT
JOURNEY INTO MAGIC
WHERE LIGHT TAKES OVER VISUALSTHE VISUALS: A TRAMPOLINE
FOR LIGHT AND SOUND
A PLAY OF TRANSLUCENCE
WHERE THINGS ARE NOT SEEN
ONE AFTER ANOTHER
BUT SIMULTANEOUSLY
A VIBRATORY FIELD
WHICH
ENVISEGES MANY LEVELS
AT ONCE
LIGHT, SOUND AND FORM
AS
PUNCTUATIONS FOR THE
UNFOLDING OF TIME STRUCTURESLIGHT MATTER: A PLAYGROUND
FOR THE SOUL
WHICH SEES MATTER
AS THE MANY DISGUISES
OF ONE LIGHT
WHERE EVERYTHING
BECOMES ‘LIGHT’
OF NO IMPORTANCE
WHERE ONE BECOMES FREE
OF APPEARANCES
GENTLY STEPPING OUT OF
MAYA’S MESH
TO RE-DISCOVER THE PULSATING
MIRACLE
OF MAN’S SUBSTANCE

PIERRE LEGRAND’S
LIGHT MATTER WORLD
Notes on the way…
Recently I saw Pierre’s latest work in his house: It was difficult to say where the work starts or ends, where the house and the garden starts or ends, or whether the sun is part of the work or whether time is an active player in the game. There were no boundaries.
Manoj Pavithran
The chromatic scale marks the history of painting just like how the rudimentary combinations of alphabets have given birth to literatures.
With a wealth of personal experience behind him, Pierre Legrand has given himself a pictorial alphabet. Not like the one already tried by a Herbin or a Kandinsky, but by compelling himself to a declination of fixed forms on which colour will surface…
and from materials more and more complex in their simplicity: pieces of string, glue, earth, paper, plastic that compose a script bordering on geography.
Gilles Castro
Alliance Française / Earth Works Expo
It is true that at first glance the work of Pierre Legrand escapes the dichotomy which traditionally separates painting from sculpture, yet his pieces are easily recognisable by a kind of ‘web’, by a certain agencing of substance which he ‘weaves’ between solid and void…

PIERRE ASKED
IF I WOULD
WRITE THE TEXT.
SINCE LIGHT MATTER
WAS INTRINSICALLY RHYTHMIC IT
SPOKE IN POETRY.
THE WORD PALACE EMERGED FROM A SIMPLICITY AND FREE ROYALTY CREATED
BY THE MODULES -
A SPACE
FOR THE SOUL.
THEIR STRUCTURAL
QUALITY GRADUATED
THE WORD PALACE
TO ARCHITECTURE,
FORMED BY LAYERS OF WRITING MADE WITH PIERRE’S SPECIALLY EVOLVED ALPHABET.
LIGHT GOT INTO THEM
FROM EVERYWHERE - INDOORS, OUTDOORS.
LIGHT BECAME AN ESSENTIAL FACTOR - NATURAL, ARTIFICIAL,
EVEN INNER LIGHT.
BIRDS STARTED
GETTING INTO THE
POROUS WALLS.
BUTTERFLIES
FLEW IN AND OUT,
PEOPLE WALKED
IN BETWEEN
THE LAYERS.
AFTER SOME TIME
THE POEMS BEGAN
APPEARING
ON MUSIC SHEETS

If a painter insists on speaking of ‘writings’ when he refers to his work, it is because they have to be deciphered, to be seen as a new form of reading…
The artist does not try to make a story about things –rather to bring us a code, a new alphabet to apprehend the real….
And if by chance it would be about representation, it won’t be about a certain event, much less, about a series of events, real or fictitious, but about a new perception and unveiling of the world.
Alejandro Canseco-Jerz
Expo: Arp Foundation, Paris
Rimbaud spoke of inventing a poetic language ‘accessible to all the ‘senses’…
Has Pierre Legrand created such a language?
Not (yet). But he has taken a quite extraordinary step in that direction...
The most important aspect is the experience itself: to walk among spaces made of poetry, observing the play of light…By acting as a bridge between painting, poetry, sculpture, music and architecture, by fusing them, in a way, this work encourages the awakening of a new, more holistic sense, capable of receiving all these impressions simultaneously, spontaneously as one… and to render the concrete porous, to allow light to pass through layers and layers of obscurity…
John Quinn
…in recent years (Pierre’s) palette has been joyous, a bewildering array of primary hues, bold, abstract but in amazing empathy…
